The Tonearm is an online magazine that seeks to give an additional and much-needed voice to artists pushing through the pockets of their medium. These artists work in music, visual art, the written word, entrepreneurship, or however they choose to make the world a more interesting place. Most importantly, our conversations with these artists are threaded by an exploration of what it's like to create cool things. These artists inspire us, and they will also inspire you.
We are interested in diverse perspectives and voices, and we encourage submissions from writers of all backgrounds and levels of experience. The Tonearm aims to provide a platform for contributors to share their passion and knowledge with our audience. Accepted pieces will be published on our website and may be promoted across our social media, email newsletter and weekly podcast.
The ideal piece will be 1,500 - 3,000 words in length and focus on outside-of-the-mainstream artistic work by those who proudly walk an independent path. We are not about music only. We are seeking submissions for:
- Interviews with and profiles of musicians, writers, artists of all kinds and interesting theorists/thinkers
- Reviews and analysis of music, books, films, concerts, events, and exhibitions
- Essays, commentary and think pieces from across the cultural landscape
- We are open to ideas that do not neatly fit into these categories. Have an idea? Try us.
To be considered, please send an email to xxx, following these guidelines:
- Your pitch – not finished pieces, including what your pitch is related to in the subject line. Example: PITCH: Mary Smith - Advance review of new album
- In the body of the email:
- a couple of sentences about why you think this piece is relevant for our site and readers
- links to three finished writing samples (published by a third party, on your own blog or website or unpublished)
- Link to or attach to your resume, bio or "about me" statement
Our current rate is $50 per accepted piece and will require you to invoice us.
Thank you for your interest in contributing to The Tonearm. We look forward to reading your submissions.
